The song’s message is simple: if in doubt, push on. Much like a good priest, I too doubt. It’s normal, you fall in love a couple of times and every go-around you run aground in the same shallows.

But as you grow older, you become accustomed to it. You figure out what the costs are of giving in to doubt and you learn to persevere. A small light ignites in your chest, a pilot light which keeps the fire going. If the cold wind blowing across rock-bottom then knocks out the furnace, you can just give it a shake and fire it up again.

The song tries to make clear that love needs doubt; that one must overcome it to truly give yourself away, time and time again.

Politics are like this too. In our times the electorate finds itself in a liquid playing field wherein facts are only facts to a few and the complexities are endless. A single man can’t hope to comprehend every issue that spins across his social feed, there’s just too much of it. So he picks a tribe from among the thousands vying for his vote and devotes himself to, for example, its orange-faced godhead. He’ll be fed all the quick-shot answers he’ll ever need.

All that is asked in return is unconditional love. Because truth is love. One must again overcome doubt and take the Leap of Faith. Your world will make perfect sense until it doesn’t anymore. Up springs doubt.
